At Narconon Arrowhead we do not use the term rehab patient when referring to our program participants. Instead we use the word “student” as it more accurately reflects what is occurring in our program. At Narconon Arrowhead once withdrawal from use is achieved and is followed by a full bodily detoxification then student is then ready to gain the life skills and abilities needed to pursue a drug free productive life. Cravings, guilt and depression must be confronted, dealt with, and eliminated is one is to achieve a lasting drug free existence. These skills and abilities can be learned and successfully applied. Rehabilitation means to restore to a previous state or condition. So what exactly does this mean when applied to drug or alcohol rehabilitation? An effective rehabilitation will address both mental and physical conditions that have been altered and worsened as a result of the addiction. Ceasing drug or alcohol use is usually the easier of the problems relating to drug and alcohol abuse. With correct medical and nutritional care and proper withdrawal regimens this can be gently and quickly achieved in a few days in most cases. Rehabilitation of the individual and the body follows. Cravings, guilt, and depression are among the key factors needing addressed and resolved in order to obtain lasting rehabilitation and a return of previous abilities, behavior levels, and personal drive. A truly effective drug rehab can actually put a person in even better mental and physical shape than he was prior to the onset of drug or alcohol abuse. When the factors which cause the original abuse are handled and tools for the future obtained, the need or desire for further drug or alcohol abuse tends to fall away and not return. Alcohol rehabilitation of course involves the cessation of all alcohol use. Alcoholic generally have all sorts of reasons and rationale for drinking. Many, many try to control their drinking and only end up putting off the inevitable. Alcoholism can only end in one of three ways – death, jail, or sobriety. There really are no other options. Many times alcoholics will be involved in other substance abuse, often unknown or unsuspected by family or loved ones. Whether it is alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both, the three factors needing fully and competently addressed are the cravings, guilt, and depression that are hand and hand with any addiction.

The Encarta dictionary defines drug abuse as ‘the harmful and illegal non-medicinal use of drugs or alcohol’. Drug abuse usually begins in an effort to relieve some sort of pain or discomfort; this could be emotion, mental, or physical. Many drugs do this, but only temporarily and generally when the drug wears off the pains and discomforts remain, often times worsened. Since they worked once more drugs are used in an effort to obtain further relief, and since tolerance builds up in most cases more and more of the drug or alcohol is needed. More and more of the person’s life centers around obtaining and using drugs. The drugs and alcohol have long ceased to cure any problems and have themselves now become the problem. At this point, drug abuse involves abuse of finances, relationships, health, career, etc. When one handles the reasons for the initial drug abuse the need for drugs fades away.
